Pi Mu Omega Elementary Science Program

Willingboro, NJ ------- On Saturday, February 23, 2008, under the direction of Deidre Pearson, Pi Mu Omega held an Elementary Science Program. The science fair was geared toward elementary students (ages 5-12 years) providing them with hands on experience with 10 different science experiments. It was held at the John F. Kennedy Center, Willingboro, New Jersey and about 50 members of the community attended, including adults and children. The event commenced with a movie, entitled Masters of Invention, about African-American scientists and inventors. Throughout the three hour program, small science projects were conducted. The science fair also taught the participants about important figures in Black History. At the conclusion of the program, each child received a booklet about 25 African-American inventors that changed our world.

South Jersey AKA Chapters Promote HIV/AIDS Awareness

Ewing, NJ ----On November 14, 2007, the Pi Mu Omega (Willingboro, NJ), Epsilon Upsilon Omega (Trenton, NJ), Theta Pi Omega (Moorestown, NJ), and Zeta Sigma (The College of New Jersey) chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) School of Nursing, School of Culture and Society, and City of Trenton Department of Health and Human Services, with the support of the department of African American Studies -TCNJ) hosted an HIV/AIDS panel in support of the North Atlantic Region's Project HOPE (Helping Other People Excel) intiative. The event took place in the Don Evans Black Box Theater at The College of New Jersey campus in Ewing, New Jersey and focused on the fact that a disproportionate number of people infected with HIV and AIDS are minorities. The event also highlighted methods of promoting prevention and awareness.

The panelists for this program included: Dr. Christopher Coleman - Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, Martina Crespo - HIV Survivor, Rev. Dr. Stanley Justice - Pastor of Trenton's Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church, and Mr. Larry Ganges - Assistant Commissioner for the Division of HIV/AIDS Services of the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services. The program was well attended by 60 high school students, 10 senior citizens, sorority members, and 122 community members.

The event was moderated by Gloria Dickinson, Centennial International Regional Director and Pi Mu Omega chapter member. One of the other main points addressed by all of the panelists was the vital need of more education and awareness of the fact that this disease is preventable. In addition to the informative and thought-provoking speeches, the audience received pink "goody bags" featuring male and female condoms, dental dams, and instructional brochures. The importance of abstinence as a viable option was also discussed. At the conclusion of the program, donations were given to Rev. Dr. Justice for the HIV/AIDS ministry at Mt. Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church in Trenton.

AKA Day at the NJ State Capital

Trenton, NJ---On June 18, 2007, Pi Mu Omega joined sorors from all over the state to Empower Sorors Planet-wide. The event was lead by Pi Mu Omega member and the deputy mayor of Willingboro, NJ, Jacqueline Jennings, and Bettye Scott, Pi Mu Omega Connections Chair.

AKA members from across the state had to the opportunity to tour the state capital, receive valuable voter education information, as well as, discuss possible voter education programs that chapters can initiate in the 2008 Centennial/Election Year. Bonnie Watson Coleman, Democratic Majority Leader of the NJ Assembly, greeted, as well as, informed members in attendance of legislation that she is currently sponsoring. This includes a bill to raise the age from 16 to 18 for students to be allowed to sign themselves out of high school.

Blondell Spellman, of Theta Kappa Omega Chapter, a candidate for the NJ Assembly from Atlantic City, was also in attendance and spoke to sorors. The mayor of Trenton was unable to attend but sent a representative from his office, Raissa Walker, of Epsilon Upsilon Omega, to present a proclamation from the mayor’s office that declared June 18, 2007 Alpha Kappa Alpha Day in Trenton, NJ. Caryl Lucas, Director of Communications and Media for the NJ Department of State, also greeted members in attendance.

One of the highlights for the day was to observe Coach C. Vivian Stringer and the Rutgers Women’s Basketball Team receive a resolution from the NJ State Senate.

Program Recap of Sister Will You Help Me

On January 4, 2007, the members of Pi Mu Omega, under the direction of Trina Gipson-Jones, RN, PhD, collaborated with the Cancer Institute of NJ at Cooper Hospital, and the Rancocas Valley Chapter of the Links, Inc. to launch the Burlington County Chapter of Sister Will You Help Me, a breast cancer support group for women of color and faith. This program proved to Encourage Cancer Screening to the Public. Below are some pictures from the event.




The program is the brain child of Diane Hyman, BSN, RN of Cooper Hospital.



The attendance was about 70 people including members of the sponsoring organizations, breast cancer survivors, and guests.

He discussed the different types of breast cancer, treatment options, survival rates and how cancer affects minorities. Cancer screening was also encouraged to improve survival rates.
