Alpha Kappa Alpha made history on Thursday, April 16, by entering the Guinness World Records for having the largest Silver Service sit-down dinner in history. That record-breaking dinner was the Centennial Gala held during the 2008 Boule´. An adjudicator from Guinness traveled to Washington, D.C., where he presented the sorority, the Washington Convention Center and Centerplate/NBSE the award of certification

Assemblywoman Elease Evans has arranged for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. to be honored by the New Jersey State General Assembly. What this entails is her getting up in front of her colleagues and reading a proclamation about the sorority and its history of service.
This is a great honor for Alpha Kappa Alpha as we celebrate our Centennial anniversary.

Leading Black Sorority Celebrates 100 Years appeared on Tell Me More, July 10, 2008
The AKA Centennial Exhibit arrives in Philadelphia on July 26, 2008 and a reception is scheduled for July 31, 2008 at the African-African American Museum in Philadelphia. Having seen the exhibit while in DC, it is a must see stop for all. The exhibit will be in Philadelphia through October 19, 2008.

The Mount Lawn, PA grave site of AKA founder Ethel Hedgeman Lyle was visited Saturday, July 12th, by sorority officers including the international AKA president, Barbara M. McKinzie (pictured above). The Philadelphia Inquirer has an article on this event. Click here to read more.

Members from New York will be clad in pink-and-green on the Plaza to make a dynamic statement about Alpha Kappa Alpha.

This historic pilgrimage to Alpha chapter was a time for each member in attendance to reconnect with the ideals, precepts and service pledge of our great Sorority. It was a chance to learn more about the legacy of the founders and to remember that out of the hopes and dreams of nine college educated women, who were one generation away from slavery, came the initiation and perpetuation of Alpha Kappa Alpha. Alpha Celebration was a terrific prelude to our Boule—it helped to bring all hearts and minds to one accord. The festivities began with registration (Saturday, January 12, 2008)—where members had access to the 21st International President Dr. Faye B. Bryant (Chairperson & Alpha Chapter Alum), the 16th International President Julia B. Purnell, the 18th International President Mattelia B. Grays, and the 25th International President Norma S. White. One of the most exciting aspects of the reception was the exhibition of the scrapbooks from the Alpha Chapter. Pi Mu Omega Member & Hostess, Tanesha Francis (Alpha Chapter Alumni; initiated 1994) was on the Alpha Celebration committee and was one of the members displaying the Alpha Scrapbook Collection during the celebration. The scrapbooks were a lovely depiction of life throughout the 100 years of the Alpha Chapter. Other highlights of this celebration included the Worship Service, where Dr. Calvin Butts ushered the Spirit into the place, discussed the “rising tide of color” and professed that we need a “new heaven and Earth”—a sermon of our struggle, our resolve, and our triumphs; and the blessing of the Pilgrimage which chronicled the life and times of African Americans from 1908 to the present delivered by a current Alpha Chapter member. These events set the tone for the march from Burr Gymnasium to the Blackburn Center on Tuesday, January 15, 2008. The silent march of over 1000 members was not only visually impacting, but mentally and spiritually as well.
